Mixing tutorial

OVERVIEW OF MIXING TECHNOLOGY

Sunday morning, June 20, 2010

The Overview of Mixing Technology tutorial is designed to give conference attendees exposure to the basic concepts of mixing technology covering a wide breadth of mixing systems with emphasis on industrial applications. Practicing engineers and students relatively new to mixing operations will acquire a good understanding of the fundamental principles of mixing, the critical issues in mixing research and development, and relevant design and scale-up methodologies. Topics range from commonly practiced mixing terminologies, single and multi-phase mixing, reactive mixing, mechanical design issues, scale-up principles, and specialty mixers such as jet and static mixers. Examples will be used to illustrate the application of mixing principles where appropriate. There will be sufficient time for class discussion and questions. The tutorial will be a great refresher for those interested in mixing technology and will give newer members to the mixing community a foundation to appreciate the more advanced concepts presented throughout the conference.

Who should attend? Engineers, scientists and students involved with mixing practice and who wish to acquire an in-depth and global overview of mixing processes will benefit from attending the tutorial.

Cost:

Conference attendees: $250 which includes lunch

Registered graduate students: free

Social program

The conference format is designed to encourage connecting and reconnecting with colleagues from the mixing community. The morning sessions run from after breakfast until lunch time, and the evening sessions follow dinner and run until 10 pm. Most afternoons are free to explore on your own or participate in a variety of social activities - check out the conference venue page >>

Some group activities will be organized (there will be an additional cost for these) with options and signups times announced during the conference. Possibilities include biking, hiking and whale watching trips. Kayaking anyone? More details will be posted as we near the conference date.

Pre and Post Conference Activities

There is much to see and do in Victoria and on Vancouver Island, Vancouver and the surrounding area are also worth visits and the time frame (late June early July) is excellent. I would encourage you to plan to stick around and enjoy the surrounding area if you are able to. I personally travel three or four times to Vancouver Island every year for recreational purposes, often with my family. My favorite spots:

- Victoria for that small city feeling that is more British than Britain;

- Tofino and Long Beach on the west coast for walks on wide open (and long) beaches and crashing waves and body surfing, camping and kayaking;

- Sooke and Botanical Beach at Port Renfrew for the pebble stone beaches, fantastic hikes (Port Renfrew is the southern terminus of the West Coat trail) and excellent sea shore tide pool exploring;

- and any of the Gulf Islands for a rural and remote get away from it all.

As they say, the opportunities are endless, and there is something for everyone. Enjoy!
